Over the past few weeks, I have tried to explain a little bit about the job we do. Sometimes it is really enjoyable; after all we are lucky enough to work somewhere different nearly every day. I mean, where else are you in a converted barn one day and an office the next? But there is also a down side to the job we do …
Your Working Environment Is It Healthy Or Not?
We always carry out the testing to a high professional standard, but sometimes we are subjected to working environments that have seasoned testers wincing at the things they see. Over the years, we have worked in various places from kitchens to offices, hotels to community centres, schools to colleges … even waste incinerators!
Some of the things that we find under a desk always makes us laugh. The main thing that we find hidden is, of course, the high heeled shoes; some times more than two pairs at a time and that is just the ones hidden under the desk and belonging to Tom! Recently we were subjected to numerous plastic spiders and I really laughed when one of my team squealed as he put his hand on one of them. Of course, we always find the hole punch that disappeared months ago, the document that should have been faxed last week, or, as in one case, a cheque waiting to be presented and paid in!
Now that might all seem like a bit of a laugh, but some of the other things really do make us wince. I’ll apologise now, but a few years ago, I was working at a university halls of residence. I was scheduled to test the kitchen areas; the first block was fine, but when it came to the second block things changed. Of course, the students had already left as this was in the summer break and just before the deep cleaning was completed ready for the new students arrival.
What greeted me will stay in my mind for years! On arriving at the first kitchen I spied what appeared to be loads of rice littered over the kitchen worktops. On careful inspection, the rice was moving! Under no circumstances was I going to do the testing unless those kitchens were cleaned pronto. Yes, I have personal protection equipment (gloves, goggles etc) but that was way beyond my remit!
Recently, we thought we had seen it all when it came to what can be found under a desk. I mean, how on earth can you miss a mouldy banana squashed under your desk?
Well, the ultimate test of our gag responses happened recently when a set of desks was separated to gain access to the cables. At the end of the line of cables – right by the power sockets and the plugs which I had to disconnect – was numerous finger nails! Not just one or two but far too many to count. The carpet was covered and I had to get to the plugs. Yuck!
Someone had been throwing their broken, bitten or cut nails down the side of the desk onto the carpet with total disregard to any hygiene issues or potential health hazards. Well, we had no alternative but to report this issue to the person responsible who not only winced at the sight but was shocked that this had even happened. The question that was posed to me made me think, “I wonder if they do this at home?” Double yuck!
