We have a new client, a church diocese in need of PAT Testing. I visited the first of the churches this week. A lovely little village church, beautiful place with a bell tower… a typical old country church. When I say old I mean 14th Century old!
You are Going to Burn in Hell!
The verger and vicar greeted me, really nice people. Mid way through testing the portable appliances we stopped for a chat about their Fire Extinguishers. The verger was telling me that they had just been serviced, but one particular unit had failed the inspection. He was expressing a wild hope that no more failed in the near future as it had been rather costly.
Now cost is subjective, I have seen wealthy people react strongly to a sum that I wouldn’t blink about and others agree to vast figures without much idea of the true value. I am afraid the verger fell into this latter category.
The Fire extinguisher in question was a CO2 model, the verger gravely told me that the Extinguisher cost £88 and the horn was an extra £25, because; “you know these new regulations that have just come in.” I think the shock and surprise must have shown on my face… I was actually speechless for a few minutes! Noticing this the verger asked me what was wrong, controlling my anger (and language, I am in a church after all) I went on to advise him that the unit should have only cost him £40 and it is a legal requirement that these units are sold with the horn (they are pretty useless without it) and there is no extra cost – they come as one unit… I will never forget the look on the vergers face – who on earth would con a small village church like this??? Seriously! Where are the business morals? We are all entitled to earn a living and that is exactly what I do by selling them at £40… £109 is a hell of a difference… speaking of hell – someone will be quite warm on judgement day!
Until Next Time…
