I consider myself very lucky that as a tradesman I have a piece of equipment on my vehicle that could be considered useful for many reasons. What is that? Well, as a company who installs and services fire extinguishers we have a number of different types in stock for clients …
Why You Need A Fire Extinguisher In Your Car
I also have an ABC dry powder extinguisher fitted to the van just in case of an emergency.
I mean, some of the tradesmen that we visit for PAT testing use specialist cutting equipment, including angle grinders which can produce sparks. Now, in most cases, they are working in a safe environment, but there could be that one instance where a Fire Extinguisher might be a useful addition to the equipment in their vehicle.
However I would have never have thought that I would be called upon to use my own van extinguisher. Last week, whilst sitting at home, I heard a commotion outside the house, a lot of screaming and shouting. So being the good neighbour I am – OK, being nosey – I had a look to see what was going on. I could see a mist had started to descend which later turned out to be smoke, coupled with an orange glow.
“The neighbour’s car was on fire. Now what do I do? Freeze, Fight or Flight? I chose to fight!”
Yes, I guess I was mad, it never entered my mind that the fire brigade had not been called. I thought someone might have done it – maybe the owner – as there was a car on fire. Well, if the fire took hold too much my front hedge could have been engulfed in flames and not too far away is my house!
So to the rescue! Opening the back of the van I grabbed a Fire Extinguisher and set about dealing with the fire. With a few short bursts, I was able to put the fire out. I then proceeded to ensure that the rest of the extinguisher was emptied into the dashboard of the car just to be sure nothing was left smouldering.
The owner of the car was just standing there. He did say thank you, though he might not be too grateful when I send him a bill to replace the extinguisher!
Afterwards, I asked him if he had called the Fire Service, the response shocked me! “No; didn’t think I needed to!” What?! It later transposed that one of the other neighbours had called the Fire Service and they arrived after the fire was out, but they still have to do the relevant safety checks to make certain.
“So you never know when a fire extinguisher could be a useful piece of equipment!”
