Over 20 years ago, my parents moved house. The place needed a major renovation, but there was one project that was started before the renovations. It was the swimming pool; just over 10 metres in length and at its deep point it is about 8 feet. When the diggers moved in, they removed in excess of 60 tons of soil to dig the hole …
Then over the next few months, my Dad and I spent a lot of time fitting the metal side panels and all the different pipe work needed to run a heated swimming pool. Once all the pipes were in, sealed and checked, we slowly back filled the soil that was not removed from site. Gradually the pool began to take shape.
Once finished, we had to fill it up! Well, this proved to be a real challenge! I mean, a normal garden hose was always going to a slow process, but one of my family members had a trick up his sleeve: he called his friends from the local fire station. By heck! Can they fill a pool quickly! However there is one thing with owning a pool – the local fire service has the right to use the water if required in the event of an emergency. Bet you didn’t know that, hey?
I can still remember the day when we had been paint-balling all weekend. I worked as a Marshall for a local company for many years and joked with the marshaling team that with it being so hot that weekend, that everyone could come back to my Mum’s house for a swim. Now, over the years we have had all sorts of parties – some of which ended up with everyone in the pool at midnight. It is really weird to see, but at that time of night, the pool was always very warm shown by the steam rising, lit up by the lights fitted in and around the pool.
Well, the boss bought a load of drink and grabbed a few bits of BBQ and off we went! What happened next will always remind me of the fun you can have with a pool. A few of the guys suffering from the heat (having worn combats and masks all weekend), stripped off to their underwear and jumped in. Always a great way to cool down!
Most of the marshalling team stayed overnight with a few crashing out on the sun loungers. My Mum, being the great woman she is, offered bacon butties to everyone the next morning and if my memory serves me, I think there was about 10 guys staying that night.
It’s great to close the office door on a Friday evening, knowing that I’ll be drinking a frosty beer in a lovely swimming pool just a few hours later! Now in the heat of this summer, there is nothing better than knowing that I have an opportunity to chill out in a lovely swimming pool, whenever I like, without having to pay for gym membership. But there is one problem. My mother lives just over an hour away which, during the week, is a lot of travel time! At the weekend it’s OK and, of course, who cares? My Mum’s got a swimming pool!
Until next time …
