Do you ever ask the question “what have you done wrong?” or “why are you picking on me?” With what has happened in the past few days all I want is to be left alone and for someone else to be picked on for a change …
I think I may have already said in the past, that personally, I have been thrown so many curve balls that it would be great for something good to happen – just for a change. On a positive note though, every time something happens you just have to get back in the saddle and start again – whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger!
Well what can I say? The service by Oreck was exceptional! They arranged for the appliance to be collected the following day and by Friday they had advised me that my vacuum was very sick. Well I couldn’t complain, it was purchased in 1998 and it meant that the repair would work out about £10 for every year of use. Now I had a decision to make – have it repaired or spend another few pounds to get a brand new machine with a 6 year guarantee. It was easy – a new machine – and they even gave me a 20% discount for being a long standing customer. Not many companies do that now a days.Anyway my week has gone like this: there I was vacuuming away, (yes some men do, on occasion) when a strange noise and blue smoke starts to emanate from the base. Quick as a flash I turned it off (and no I did not grab the fire extinguisher) and initially I thought it was the rubber belt that had burnt out; but the bad news was with a new belt it still had the same noise, so I knew I needed to return the machine to the manufacturer.
So they arranged for the machine to be delivered on Monday, the down side being Parcelforce, delivery sometime between now and then. Early afternoon came and still no delivery, but I get an email to tell me that the hoover would be delivered on Tuesday. Well a little annoyed (me? No never!) and I contacted Oreck who were extremely apologetic. I even got to speak to the person who took the original order (a UK call centre) to be told that the problem was with Parcelforce and as a way of saying sorry they were going to send us a year’s supply of hoover bags worth about £30.
As I write this the door bell has just chimed and my new hoover has been delivered, so I have to admit I have been impressed with the service by Oreck – even more so if I get another 12 years out of this machine I guess I can’t complain. On the plus side it proves that good customer service is paramount to ensure your business flourishes and I’m sure that owners of small businesses everywhere try to ensure that their service is exceptional, I know I try my hardest.
Just last week I had a call from a letting agent who needed some apartments PAT tested. Well I arranged to do the testing at the end of the week and he sent me a list of apartments that he wanted tested. He wanted me to do 4 on day one and 4 on day two. By the end of day one they were all completed and the client then gave me another 3 apartments to do the next day. His reason being that he had tested the flats in the past and it took him hours to do. As FTS are specialists in Portable Appliance testing, we understand the equipment that needs testing. I even found a number of my pet hates – the cardboard wiring diagrams still left on a lot of appliances – sorry but DIY can be dangerous.
Now right at the start I said I wish something good would happen, well it did. This week a very good friend of mine sent my wife a little gift. She told her it was something that she could use to cheer herself up especially as she returned to work for the first time since all her cancer treatment. Well to say the least it was a bit of a shock. It was afternoon tea for 2 at the Dorchester in London. I guess I better use the new hoover again to ensure that she takes me rather than someone else!
