This weekend saw FTS start four weeks of testing at one of our biggest clients. Even though they have an in-house testing team, they know that we have the capability and resources to test all of their equipment in a specific period of time …
Weekend PAT Testing
Our client also requires us to have been cleared following various security checks, before we are allowed to work unsupervised on the site. Although we have a short period of time for testing, we have to meet the strict safety needs for the clients business and, more to the point, our own safety. So to start with, bacon rolls, tea and coffee is prepared and it’s strange that I’ve never had a team member arrive late at my house!
If any of the neighbours were about at that time of the morning, they must wonder what the heck is happening when four guys all turn up within minutes of each other, just after 5am. Then we leave for the hour long journey to the clients premises. On arrival we sign the relevant registers and receive all the equipment that we need throughout the day. We even supply DNA samples!
All in one paper onesies, complete with elasticated cuffs and blue trim,Our equipment for the day includes the following fashion items:
Pale blue, non-slip, shoe covers,
Elasticated white “mop style” hair net/head covering,
Green and white face mask,
If we are lucky, we’re asked to finish off the whole ensemble with latex gloves!
We did have one issue that at the time was a little concerning but now we can laugh. We moved into one specific area and on pressing the exit button, two of us exited to the next area. Once the testing was completed we placed our passes on the lock and nothing happened! That telltale clunk of the door lock being released remained silent and, of course, the door didn’t release.Sometimes, we have to change three or four times a day, so that we do not cross contaminate the equipment or areas. Just to be sure, we even have to wipe all of the test machines, screwdrivers, pens and labels with special cleansing wipes. Everywhere we go we are monitored both by the security officers and also by our electronic passes.
Oops! Now what? There was no one around and it’s the weekend so we are locked in with no way of getting out! If you find a YouTube clip of two guys dressed in unfashionable onesies, jumping up and down in front of a security camera trying to get the attention of the security guards, well, it’s most likely to be us!
After what seemed to be hours, the security officer arrived and let us out – not before laughing his socks off through the glass door at us. He then told us that we could have exited through the external door as the alarm was not active because we were working in that area. He could have told us earlier! I have to admit, the more he laughed, the more tempted I was to fail his kettle when I did his office. But I’m not that sort of person; I’m a professional – but now with a grudge!
Until next time …So if you want your business to meet with the current regulations, then please do give me a call on 0330 6600264 or click here to ping over an email.
