Get equipment tested with no downtime!
Recently we attended a client’s premises to carry out a Thermal Survey on their server room. We did this during office hours with no downtime for the workforce and we didn’t have to do the survey on a weekend or in the evening …
Thermal Image Surveys Within Server Rooms
This survey was the first that this client has ever had carried out and we found three potential fire risks within the server racks in the room. Although at a nice cooling temperature of about 20 degrees, the thermal camera was able to highlight the potential dangers of hot spots.
The first issue within a rack was that one of the cooling fans for the servers was running at twice the temperature of the other four in the rack! This gave us great cause for concern and once finished we would inform the client.
The second and third problem was indicated by two mains power leads which both showed an increase in temperature to the others nearby. The first was a very simple fix; the lead was loose in the socket and a quick push indicated that it was now seated correctly.
We waited 15 minutes to see if it made any difference and yes, the lead had returned to normal temperature. The second lead unfortunately was not loose so there must have been a problem within the lead itself and it would need replacing.
On completion of the survey, we highlighted the problems to the client who was amazed at everything we had found, simply because they could not be seen by the naked eye. It was decided that this weekend the fan would be replaced and the lead powering a network router would be replaced later that day.
“In a matter of 60 minutes we were able to highlight 3 potential fire hazards!”
And the client was not aware of any of them. One was fixed at little or no cost by us and the other two meant that only a few minutes of downtime would be required. The potential cost saving? Well, anything is better than a fire, isn’t it?
