Little over three weeks ago I received a call in the office from a gentleman asking for a quote to carry out PAT testing on some band equipment. After asking a number of simple questions, I was able to provide a verbal quotation which I would later confirm in writing …
Having worked in the entertainment industry for over 25 years, I do understand how equipment can be abused, when in transport and whilst in operation. Anyway, after being told that my quote was very reasonable, considering the fact that he had already been quoted £100 for the 12 items to test, I sent the quotation and waited for the client to call back, as he had to arrange for all the band to have their equipment made available.
Now this created a bit of a problem, having nearly three weeks to arrange everything including a date to have their equipment tested. They now needed to have the tests completed and a certificate in time for – wait for it – Bank Holiday Monday. Now in most cases, I would try to accommodate testing requests, but in this instance, there was absolutely no way I was going to be able to help this client in the time available.Well this week, I got the call back. The client first asked if we would work on a Sunday, my response was that we normally do, but as this was a bank holiday weekend, I regret that I would not be working this Sunday, The reason why – I was spending the day at the Olympic rowing centre in Dorney.
I made the suggestion that I could carry out the testing on the Saturday but instantly was told that one of the band members was not going to bring his equipment until the Sunday. My thoughts then turned to trying to come up with an alternative solution, but in this instance I was not going to be able to help with such a tight time scale.
I have no idea how this band were going to perform at a hotel that had specifically asked for current PAT certification, but then that was really not my problem. If this band had made a little bit more effort, over the past few weeks, I’m sure I would have been able to help, but as more and more hotels and venues across the country are asking for copies of recent PAT certification, they really should have been a little more prepared.
