Rest On My Laurels Or Expand
As a result of the increased workload, I have had to start thinking about expanding the business. To do this, I must first take a step back from ‘being on the tools’ and start looking at ways in which I can grow.
After a number of meetings with various consultants, I have learnt that there is more help out there than small business owners are aware of. A lot more! This help always seems to be hidden in the depths and without the key – in my case the consultants – you will never be able to unlock it.The first step that I took was by talking to a business consultant who I have known for a couple of years through one of my networking groups. Well, talk about speaking to the right person! Within a few days, I had made an appointment to discuss my plans with an advisor from the Growth Accelerator and so my new journey began.
I was not aware that there are grants for small businesses for just about everything. There are various other forms of help including schemes which allow you to have specialist advice on specific areas, one of which I have asked for help with is marketing, specifically the current material that we use and to examine if it is fit for purpose.
So what did I have to do to start with? Well, that was easy … look at my business plan and put together a new five year plan. I took advice on employing additional staff, in which the best and most suitable option for the short term was to take on sub contractors. At the moment, I have a new sub-contractor working on a current contract and am looking to take on more in 2014. Busy is not the word for it!
Now I need to look at the options that are open to me to help expand the business. One of these is further training for me and a new staff member. Maybe I might even have to consider some admin help, all of which will allow me to concentrate on the way in which I can help the business to get new clients rather than being out in the field myself.
Until next time …See why I need to start developing my expansion plans?
