It’s always difficult, when asked to quote for PAT Testing, to pitch the price just right. Too high and the job will go to your competition. Set the price too low and there is the potential that the prospective client will be concerned that you may not be offering a good service …
PAT Testing Competition Or Choice?
Recently, I was asked to quote for a nursery. I was told, during the phone call, that she thought there was only about 40 items, so I suggested that it would be best if I called by and carried out an inspection prior to providing the quote. Not only does this give me an understanding of the site but it also allows me to see the layout. You never know what could be lurking, when you start testing.
Anyway, as the site was local and less than 4 miles from my office, it was easy to fit in. On arrival, the manager was shocked when I was able to produce ID proving who I was.
I was shown the various areas of the site and asked loads of questions, which made the manager think about the testing and her requirements. I even suggested that an engineer was given access to the site early in the morning, before the children arrived. This would allow the engineer to complete the testing of the areas where the children would be, leaving the office and staff areas to last. It wasn’t something that they had considered, but it was thought to be a good idea.
I gave the manager a verbal quote before leaving the site and stated that I would provide a written one later that afternoon. I was informed, that she had already been given a quote by another company, but the person who arrived really couldn’t have cared less about the work. I was told he was very abrupt, rude and even stated that unless he was booked there and then the price would go up. Needless to say, he wasn’t going to get the job.
On providing the manager with the verbal quote, she exclaimed “Is that all?” I did suggest that I could increase it for her if she liked but she said no and we promptly booked a date for the testing.
Once the testing had been completed, we were able to provide all the documentation and a certificate. More to the point, the Nursery Manager was so impressed with our service that she confirmed the next year’s testing as it is part of their insurance requirement to be tested annually.
