Local Milton Keynes Business Owner, Andrew Mitchell of FTS Safety Solutions Ltd has been instrumental in developing the new UK wide trade association for PAT Testing, PATTA.
To date the Portable Appliance Test (PAT Testing) industry has been unregulated. PATTA aims to ensure that the industry practices are regulated, that best practices are employed by its members and looks to bring clarity and peace of mind for customers.
Andrew comments: “Whilst PAT Testing is not a legal requirement, employers do have a responsibility to ensure a safe working environment for their employees. Businesses whether public or commercial entities also have a clear responsibility under the Health and Safety Act to ensure the premises and equipment are safe for visitors and users. Regular PAT Testing and visual inspections of electronic equipment is considered key.”
“The things I have seen over the years would make your hair curl, everything from cardboard diagrams left on plugged-in appliances, to exposed wires and even cracked and damaged plug casings with access to a live supply.
Even when a business uses a PAT Test service, the standard they receive is not always as it should be. For example, it is quite common to visit a new client and see that they have had a PAT Test previously, but the test labels are left blank with no date applied. I have also heard stories of tests being carried out with a mobile device, how waving a mobile in front of an appliance can test the fuse is beyond me! PATTA will ensure their members adhere to best practices, giving clients peace of mind and our members credibility. It has been an honour to be asked to help set the guidelines and policies for this new regulatory association.”
