Over the years since I started in business I have attended numerous networking events, here in Milton Keynes, Bucks and further a field in Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire, however the most recent ‘almost a networking event’ was a business exhibition in Bedfordshire for new and existing small businesses …
There I was with my stand all primed and ready to greet potential new customers. Soon they started to arrive and they stand there looking and reading the pull up banner for FTS SAFETY SOLUTIONS – Specialists in Health and Safety Testing and I step forward. I look into their eyes and I can see that panic has set in as their eyes have glazed over.
Why do people think that Health and Safety is something to panic over? Here are a couple of questions I like to ask:
Why do we all get worried about it?
What is it that frightens us?
If you have any answers then please let me know in the comment section below.
I recently visited a friend of my wife. God did she make a mean Farmhouse Cake – until she stepped up and admitted that she bought it from the local baker. While I was there she said she was having problems setting up her new computer and the speakers. I offered to help, but she refused my offer – in an email she later told me the reason – she didn’t want me to see the jumble of cables behind the desk which in her eyes was dangerous, why, because I work in health and safety and she didn’t want me to say anything! Personally I think the reason we all panic is to do with the Health and Safety regulations that are out there but certainly some have gone a step too far. I mean I never had to wear body armor, gloves and goggles to play conkers when I was a kid (if my memory serves me correctly), I never wear safety goggles when I use a pressure washer but if and when I read the instruction manual (I’m a man so I probably won’t) I’m sure it will say that you need to wear safety goggles when using it.
Although my offer of help was declined, I was still able to help her out, as she runs a small local Bed & Breakfast which has recently been awarded a 5 star rating for food. She asked if I could help advise and supply fire extinguishers. She even bought a small extinguisher for the office – remember fire kills and where you have a lot of electrical appliances there is always a risk.
So please don’t panic! Health and Safety regulations are here to stay. I can help and advise you on your needs to maintain a safe working environment for you, your staff and your building. Why not give me a call on 0330 6600264 and arrange an assessment?
Until next time …
