On various forums, over the past few weeks, there have been a number of discussions which relate to the poor quality of power leads that are being supplied with new equipment or are available from various websites …
The main problem is that the leads do not meet with British Standards and, as a result, could allow an individual to get an electric shock, or worse, could be killed. Companies within the PAT industry are constantly being squeezed to provide a professional service for the cheapest price. However, this means that in order to do the job some companies may cut corners and by cutting corners some of these dangerous leads could be missed.
We checked this lead by running the relevant PAT Test for a mains power lead and found that the fuse did not meet with British Standard, the cable was far too thin and therefore below standard and in this case, the moulded plug had the cables wired the wrong way round! This meant a reversed polarity with the live wire going to the neutral pin and the neutral wire going to the live pin of the plug. So dangerous! Over the past few weeks, we have noticed that two very well-known companies have been supplying these counterfeit leads with their new products. Just to prove our concerns, we opened a brand new piece of equipment delivered two days earlier and on inspection found the lead did not meet with British Standards.
In another instance the Earth pin had a plastic safety sheath meaning that the appliance could not be earthed in the event of a problem. Both incredibly shocking findings so click here to see how to check for dangerous plugs and leads.
