When a fire extinguisher has been serviced, you will notice that a tamper seal will have been placed around the top, securing the safety pin in place. This is a visible indicator that the appliance has been checked and has not been tampered with …
How Do I Know If My Fire Extinguisher Has Been Tampered With
However, the tamper seal can be easily broken and can fall off, especially in hotels where they can be knocked with suitcases. Remember though, this is not necessarily an indicator that the extinguisher has been used or tampered with.
If when you carry out your monthly checks on your fire extinguishers and you come across one that has a missing tamper seal, then it would be good practice to contact your servicing company, to arrange for the appliance to be checked and resealed. I mean, how do you know that the seal was removed because the appliance was actually discharged?
“I have known fire extinguishers to be taken outside by drunken individuals and discharged just for fun!”
When a qualified service engineer checks a fire extinguisher, he will carry out a number of routine steps, which will include the weighing of the extinguisher. This would immediately identify if the unit has been discharged.
So if you come across a broken seal on your fire extinguisher, call us out and we will check that the unit has not been discharged and you can be safe in the knowledge that in the event of a fire the appliance is full and suitable for use.
