If you are a consultant and your job entails using electrical equipment such as laptops, projectors and other such apparatus, it may be necessary for you to ensure that you meet with the current Health and Safety requirements …
Consultants Are You A Health And Safety Hazard
Increasingly, many more venue providers have been asking consultants and/or trainers to provide PAT certificates before using their location and meeting rooms. Some may even ask you on the day and if you cannot provide the relevant certification, then you have a problem.
“You could end up being very embarrassed if a course or meeting has to be cancelled at the last minute!”
Depending on where you are, there may be an onsite alternative. For example, a hotel is likely to have what you need so you can set up and continue with their equipment instead. If, however, you are going to a smaller location that lends itself purely for the space and does not provide you with anything else, the chances are you won’t be able to use any equipment thus jeopardising the purpose of you being there. This will add additional expense, panic and stress to your day, not to mention the time wasted for those attending!
So even if you think your equipment is safe, nothing can prepare you for the number of counterfeit goods/leads that are being used and in some cases being supplied as new.
Recently, one of our clients – who is a consultant – had a brand new laptop which she asked us to check and test. It had been supplied with a dangerous counterfeit lead and this laptop was manufactured by a reputable company too.
Any consultant/trainer who use their equipment at a venue may well risk invalidating their own Public Liability Insurance if they cannot prove that the equipment has been tested. More importantly, if there happens to be an incident as a result of using your equipment, then the venue may not be covered which can have serious implications for them and they could end up in court.
“It doesn’t take long to have your equipment PAT tested!”
We will come to you or you can come to us (by appointment), but if you have an up and coming event taking place, it will be wise to double check you have valid certification so that your insurance is not put into jeopardy, thereby risking the inconvenience it can cause.
