Over the past few weeks, in addition to working in various laboratories, I have had a number of enquiries to PAT test a selection of retail businesses. As a customer, you would expect that when you go into the shop you should be safe, but you can never be assured that this will be case. Some of the things that have been found would make your hair curl. Quite literally …
One of the premises really was quite frightening; even worse was the fact that they had been tested just over a year ago. The shop sold various pieces of collectable items which personally – well, I’ll not pass comment – but on the safety side it really was unsafe.
There were so many appliances that were being used and had not even been checked, which on quick visual inspection were dangerous. I mean, would you actually use your hoover if the plug was broken? Well, here they were – doing just that!
The member of staff really didn’t see the problem of using the hoover. She said that now it was plugged in it was safe. I wonder if she understands the dangers of electricity? I mean, even in the past few days, a contractor was electrocuted and died while working at a Marks and Spencer’s store.
Anyway, after spending just over eight hours testing their appliances, failing items that were simply beyond repair and passing items I could make safe, the premises were considered to meet current regulations. I had to remove a lot of non-insulating Gaffa tape and use rubber cable protectors on the floors too!
I gave the report to the person responsible and explained all the work and repairs that had been made. I was told that she had concerns about the company who had tested the premises that previous year and told me that along with constant swearing while he was working, the one thing that annoyed her the most was when the testing engineer continually kept kicking the various glass display cabinets. Now if that had been me as the customer, I would not have hesitated – I would have called his office and got the engineer removed from my premises!
Until next time …If you would like a testing company, whose engineers do not swear or kick your business equipment and provide a first class service then call me on 0330 6600264 for a free no obligation quotation or click here to ping over an email and I’ll get right back to you.
