Over the last 10 years of PAT Testing we really have seen it all! There are so many rumours and myths including the one about infrared floating around it is no wonder clients come to us confused and some times with high risk appliances…
PAT Testing your office got you in a Tizz?
Relax, here are 3 PAT Testing Myths Busted:
1. You must have all Portable Appliances tested every year.
That is simply not true. It depends on your usage, what the equipment is and the inherent risks involved. For example if you are a DJ then it is a very good idea to test annually, some venues won’t allow you to set up without a recent certificate. If you are a construction worker it is advised you PAT Test every 3 months, but if you are an administrative office with low risk then we recommend annual, bi-annually or for very low risk cases once every 3 years. Give us a call on 0330 6600264 for advice on recommended PAT Testing schedules.
2. You can PAT Test with a Smartphone.
This myth baffles us greatly, but plenty of new clients tell us the last supplier used a Smartphone to test their equipment. A correct PAT Test involves unplugging the appliance, checking the cables for any deterioration, check the plug is not damaged and checking the fuse is the right rating, then you need to put the plug into the test machine which will then carry out a series of tests… unless they have started providing Smartphones with plug sockets then I have serious doubts as to the validity of the ‘Test’.
3. You can thoroughly test 500-600 items per day
There are a number of very cheap PAT Testers out there, yes I don’t mind admitting it, far cheaper than us. However, are they really carrying out a thorough test? On a very, very good day we can test up to 250 items per engineer. Look at the point above, this means we have to take the back off the plug, check the fuse, check for damage to the casing and wiring and then complete the test with an accredited machine. In a 10 hour day that would mean 50 to 60 plugs removed per hour – these are either ninja/robots or I would submit the test is incomplete. What on earth is the point in PAT Testing if it is not done properly? By the way we don’t charge per hour, we charge per item inspected, so it really isn’t in our interest to prolong the job!
So if you want your Portable Appliance’s tested thoroughly you know where to come, if you want any of the Myth Services described above – then call the Ninja/Robots.
